Level 0 Archive Slooooooooow

Ken, You should be able to back up at the rate of 1 GB every 30 minutes or so and I've seen even faster (20 min/GB). First change the tape blocking factor to 1024. Second do make sure the DAT and your disks are not sharing a common controller. Finally, what model DDS device are you using - 2000DC or 4000DC - if some other device look at upgrading. And I am writing to the device with a compressed driver. This should speed up the archive writing as much as possible. Now if the problem is with the speed at which the archive is reading the data - that is another matter. You know I don't think 700's were intended as database servers - they just don't have the IO bandwidth of 800's. And your disk strategy is important, too. I am avoiding arrays in RAID mode and going with lots of 1 or 2 GB independent disks with mirroring for faster response time and the ability to truly isolate the high activity tables. Hope this helps! --John Powell
