Kudos to Informix

(I'm waiting for a compile) I've been meaning to mention this for a while, but no time donchaknow. But this particular compile is a bear, so I've got a minute every 20 or so here. Some time ago I went to Malaysia and assisted in installing a couple of Online engines - along with my application. Since then I've been back here checking up on that application occasionally. One of the nice things about Informix connectivity is that I connect to my local engine, select database@malaysia_server and rock. Sure performance isn't like the engine was next door, in fact the transpacific cable went down during this period and all network activity was by satellite. Perfomance was still acceptable - certainly better than using a telnet session. The advantage being that when you ask, for example, 'Table-> Info' - you aren't drawing sections of characters on the screen and then waiting for the next packet - your engine gets the list of tables and then displays them to you. PLUS even with a poor net connection - the engine never dropped the line. There are other advantages as well - your editor session is local - no long type ahead wait. Syntax checking and so forth is local - I'm sure you get the picture. True client server. This also works from an SE engine a colleague is using. It's nice to have some things you can depend on. Sorry about the disjointed flavour of this - it's been written over 6 'compile breaks.' cheers j. _____________________________________________________________________________ Jack Parker - Hewlett Packard, DMD/IS Boise, Idaho, USA jparker@hpbs3645.boi.hp.com Back in Boise _____________________________________________________________________________ If anything can go wrong, fix it.
