Right, I think I know how to make it work...
Firstly the v4 isql does not have i18n support so the message files
are all in the wrong place. v7 puts them in language specific
sub-directories of /usr/informix/msg but v4 puts them in /usr/informix/msg
itself. You may get away with linking the *.iem files from a sub-directory
into /usr/informix/msg. Alternatively you could copy the real v4 *.iem
files across.
Once you have the message files you should at least get a splash
screen before isql errors :-). If it does error it is probably
because the v4 isql cannot talk to a v7 sqlexec back end. If so
just put SQLEXEC=/usr/informix/lib/sqlrm in your environment and
try again - sqlrm allows "old" programs to talk to "new" engines.
