Connecting to IDS 10 server
Posted in 2007
Topics: Installation, Setup & Upgrades, Server Administration
I downloaded and installed the demo on my XP pc and it worked ok. I connected
a .net app to a table I created using the dbaccess program.
However after a reboot I now cannot connect to the server I created. I keep
getting connection refused trying to connect with the dbaccess program.
I'm pretty green on the server setup/maintain side as I develop apps for
informix so any help would be appreciated.

David,
This error is most probably caused by the fact that your instance is no
running... The shutdown would have stopped it and nothing else has restarted
it yet.
From the Start button (on XP), go to All programs, Informix, Informix
Dynamic Server 10.0 and select windows_soc.
This will give you a command prompt window with all your env vars setup.
At the prompt, type oninit (or oninit -v [verbose] to get more verbarge as
the instance comes up). Minimize this window (leave it running) and try
your app again.
Hope this helps.
Dan

Though Daniel's advice is likely to work, it is not recommended or supported
to run oninit in foreground on Windows. Instead go to Control
Panel->Administrative Tools->Services and locate the Informix Dynamic Server
service. Go to service properties tab and set it to start automatically so
that it will start after a reboot, then start the service.
If the informix password has changed recently you would also need to set the
correct logon password in services.
Regards
Guy

Thanks so much!! That worked and now I can work on my test app rather than the admin of the IDS though I should learn more about that side of things. Is that how IDS is meant to be managed on XP? Using the services in windows or does IDS actually have configuration tools to assist? I assume due to using a free version a lot of stuff has been cut out. David

There are some utilities to assist with IDS service administration.
%INFORMIXDIR%\\\\bin\\\\starts.exe to start the service, e.g.
starts %INFORMIXSERVER%
to bring the named IDS instance online. starts can take the same arguments as
oninit (e.g. "starts %INFORMIXSERVER% -iy" to bring up an instance and
initialize disk for the first time).
and
onmode -yukwould bring an instance offline (same as UNIX) and shutdown the service.

Not much is cut out of the free version. There are many options if you're
asking about more than just starting and stopping the IDS service.
