ESQL/C error code following a fetch

Is there a reason that I would be getting an error code of -267 (The cursor has been previouly released and is unavailable) after several rows have been fetched and the cursor has not been closed. for example (assume the cursor has been declared with an into clause) $open test_curs; $fetch test_curs; while (sqlca.sqlcode == 0){ /* some logical work gets done with the data */ fetch test_curs; } /* end while */ $close test_curs; It works ok for several passes but fails with a -267 error code and exits the while loop.
