Re: Help: Reducing Extents

Your options are:
1) Unload the table and recreate it. If the table is small/medium in size,
this is an
easy option. I would recommend setting the entent sizes for the table when
you
recreate it, although online will normally try to set the table up as a
single extent
initially.
Advantage: Requires the least space in the db to perform the resize, I would
recommend using onload or onpload (V7.2+, fastest method) to reload the data
for medium/large table.
Disadvantage: Must have enough space in the filesystem to hold the unloaded
data.
2) Create a new table, with the extent sizes you want and with the same
definition
as the table to be recreated. Load the new table with a select from...insert
into...
Drop original table and rename the new table.
Advantage: Faster than 1.
Disadvantage: Use lots of log space, requires enough freespace in the db to
hold 2
copies of the table.
3) If you have an index, alter the index to cluster?? Actually I have never
tried to do
it this way, but I think you will find that the table gets rebuilt when you
do this, and
potentially resized at the same time???
Advantage: Fastest route.
You might also want to consider unloading the entire db and recreating it. If
you run
oncheck -pe I suspect you will find a number of tables that might benefitfrom being
resized.
