can not get my IDS up
Posted in 2006
A user couldn't start IDS after restoring a database, getting "oninit: Fatal error in shared memory initialization". Respondents suggested checking the online.log/MSGPATH and running oninit -v for detail; looking for leftover shared memory segments from a crashed or still-running instance (ipcs | grep informix, clear with ipcrm, or onmode -yuk); verifying chunk/disk permissions; ensuring SERVERNUM is unique; and reducing an over-large initial shared memory setting on 32-bit. It was also noted a restore leaves the engine quiescent, so onmode -m, not oninit, is needed. The poster never replied, so no resolution is recorded.

I have restored a database and now i am trying to get the informix server up,
i can't. I am getting the following message:
$ oninit: Fatal error in shared memory initialization
What do i do???
Hi,
maybe some shared memory segments are still occupied.
You can try onstat -g seg or at least
ipcs -mbp (on HP-UX) to see if anything is still there.
How did you restore? Did you change some configuration?
Hava a look at the message log - maybe there is more information.
Bye

Check the disk partition used by Informix and ensure that the permissions are

Doug,
On attempting to bring up the instance the engine will log messages to
the MSGPATH, Also what command are you attempting to bring the engine up
with? Straight oninit or oninit -s with either of these add a -v (for
verbose) and a certain amount of info will come back to the screen. I
find these messages to be helpful when facing unknown problems.
Were there any error messages from the restore? Was it an ontape restore
an onbar restore, or an external archive restore?
You did not mention if the restore was to the same machine the archive
was taken from, what version you have, or SE versus IDS. This
information would be helpful.

Sounds like the instance is already online. Did you shut it down after the
restore? If so, ipcs|grep informix should tell you if there are any stray
memory segments and if so, you will need to run ipcrm.

Look in online.log, it should tell you what's wrong.
In case you have other instances running on the machine, check the servernum
parameter (must be unique).
If there has been a crashed instance, check shared memory segments with
ipcs. If there is no other instance running, no informix segments/semaphores
should be there. In case there are old segments, drop them with ipcrm -s/-m
<id>.
This error also occurs when the initial shared memory segment is too big
(for a 32bit release, it should be about max. 800MB). In this case, decrease
the parameter in onconfig.

Jamie-
I am assuming you used ontape -r to recover your instance.
When you restored you database did you try to run oninit? When
a restore finishes, it leaves the engine in quiescent mode. You can use
onstat -p as a quick way to verify quiescent status. If your engine isdown (shared memory not initialized), use Marcus' instructions for
clearing any stuck segments, you may want to run onmode -yuk first,
though. If it were me, I'd start a second terminal session and run this
command in it:
tail -f /usr/informix/online.log
That will show what goes in your log as it happens. Then in
another terminal window execute oninit -v, to start in verbose mode.
This will tell you, if the engine fails to start, at exactly what point
failure occurs. If onstat says you have a quiescent engine, use onmode
-m (multiuser) to bring the engine online, oninit will only clash with
the already running processes. If you have a contract, calling support
is almost never a bad idea.

Over and above the suggestions already made, you can help yourself by
providing relevant information so that we can make some informed guesses
about the problem (see http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html).
Let's see:
* Which version of IDS?
* Which platform (o/s and version)?
* How did you restore the database?
- ON-Tape, ON-Bar, AR-Checker?
- Was it a single database in an instance or a whole instance?
What information is in the online log file?
What information do you get using 'oninit -v'?
