Ontape question
Posted in 2006
A user mirrors a production server onto a standby box by restoring a nightly level-0 DLT archive with 'ontape -r' and then applying logical logs from an 8mm tape, and asked whether the logical logs could be restored directly without first sitting through the hour-long level-0 restore. The answer was no — ontape's prompt sequence must be followed — but suggestions included scripting the prompts with 'expect' or a shell co-process, and simply leaving the standby in log-rollforward state so new logs can be applied as they arrive. Several replies pointed out he was hand-building High Availability Data Replication (HDR, available since v6) and advised networking the standby with a different IP and using HDR instead; a caveat was noted for blobspace BYTE/TEXT data. No single clean command-line resolution was found.

Hello,
On June 15 I posted:
When I run 'ontape -r', it asks me if I want to restore from an archive
tape (an 8mm tape) after restoring from level0 backup (a DLT tape). Is
there any way to just go straight to that 8mm tape for restore and
bypass the hour I have to wait for the level0 restore to complete
before getting the prompt for archive tape restore?
As a followup, I guess I wasn't too clear. I have a Production Server
and a Backup Server. On the Production Server, I run 'ontape -c' all
day that backs up logical logs as they get written to my 8mm tape. At
the end of the day, I run a level0 (ontape -s -L 0) backup that backs
up everything to my DLT tape. I then use these 2 tapes to restore to my
Backup Server everyday in case our Production Server goes down.
Here are the steps I take on the <STRONG>Backup Server</STRONG>:
1) I insert DLT tape from Production Server into Backup Server
2) I run 'ontape -r' on Backup Server
3) it prompts me: 'continue restore (y/n)?'. I hit "y" and "Enter".
4) it prompts me: 'backup logical logs (y/n)?'. I hit "y" and "Enter"
5) I then have to wait an hour for my level0 backup on my DLT tape
drive to finish
6) I then get a prompt: 'Level1 restore (y/n)?'. I hit "n" and "Enter".
7) I then get a prompt: 'restore logical logs (y/n)?'. I hit "y" and
"Enter".
8) This is where I put in my 8mm Logical Log tape from my Production
Server into the Backup Server.
9) The logical logs from the 8mm get written to the Backup Server
10) Now the Production Server and Backup Server are identical in terms
of data.
My question is this: I don't want to wait the hour on point 5 from the
list above. I want to be able to restore logical logs from the 8mm w/ a
command. Is there a command I can run taht will allow me to restore
logical logs from the 8mm tape drive on my Backup Server?
The reason is I am writing a script to automate all this.
Thanks!
You sure got me confused.
You said that you backup logs all day, and then at the end of the day you run a level 0 archive ?
So why do you need the logical log backups to restore your backup server ?
Any logical log backups done before the level 0 archive are useless, as the restore from the level 0 takes you as far as you can go.
Now if you said that you did a level 0 archive and THEN backed up logs to tape, I'd understand.
Also, I see no need for you to say yes to backing up the logs on the backup server before the restore. What good are they ? You are using the level 0 tapes to restore the database.
What am I missing here ?

hahahah....sorry for the confusion, I know it's a long description...
"So why do you need the logical log backups to restore your backup

Because in case the server goes down in the middle of the day. If the
Production Server goes down at 12 noon, I'll have the last logical log
entry that was written to prior to the crash. If I did just a level0
and the system crashed at 12 noon. I only have last night's backup tape
to go off of....hope that makes sense.
thanks!

OH Ok, I get you. This is something you are doing like a disaster recovery type exercise.
There are ways to automate the whole process. If you have expect installed you can use it to automate.
Also, There are some less neat ways to use shell scripting to wait for the prompt, and issue the 'enter' command.
Below is a way of returning the standard IO of the ontape command to the shell. Then you can 'read' input and print or echo "\\n" if the input is what you expect it to be. Not a very nice solution, but it works.
# Start a co-process of ontape.
(
ontape -s
) |&
What I used to do was create an "expect" script to expect prompts from ontape and issue the return commands, and the Y,N commands, while at the same time redirecting standard out of the ontape command to a file in /tmp. Then I had a backround process monitor that file for tape mount commands. You wouldn't even need to do that, as you only have one dlt and one 8mm, so you can just have them both mounted and ready to go. You would still need either expect, or a redirect of std IO as shown above, to be able to know when to hit return and answer Y/N etc...
Hope this helps.

leave the database as is; when production has more logs to apply then
do so
since after rollforwarding the trx log at end of tape, ontape asks if
there is more
logs to be restored. -->> when the logs are available press yes ....
etc.
BTW All of this is in a thing called High Availability Replication.
Check it out; all of that is automatic;
For now one drawback, if you have blobs (Byte and Text datatype) in
blobspaces
you have to wait until this is also available in HDR or move blobs
(Byte and Text datatype)
to regular dbspaces.
Superboer.
You need to look at High Availability Data Replication (HDR) and
similar disaster recovery strategies
you are basically implementing this manually at the moment

Is HDR available on Informix-Online Version 7.24.UC3?
So it seems like there is no way of directly going to the logical log
tape to recover the logical logs? I have to do "ontape -r", wait for
the hour for the DLT to finish, then proceed to the logical log tape,
right?
thanks!

HDR was first released with Version 6.

hmmmm....interesting proposition Simmons, Keith....since this is just a
Backup Server doing nothing but sitting there waiting for Production to
die, I could do leave it in a state of waiting for the next set of
logical logs.....interesting...
wow you guys are super. I'm kinda new to informix and really appreciate
the professional responses and assistance.
thanks!

oh I see.... well I would like to do something like that, however my Backup Server is not on the network. It's just sitting there 'stand-alone' with the same IP, same Hostname, Same Informix and SAP configs, just waiting for Production to die. That's when I'll put the Backup Server onto the network and start restoring stuff. Now w/ HDR, I would assume you would have to put the Backup server onto the network. And honestly I don't know how to have a Backup INFORMIX/SAP server on the network while the Production one is going. Basically I just did a mksysb of my Production AIX/INFORMIX/SAP Server and restored it onto a different server that's stand-alone. And this stand-alone server (Backup Server) is off-line, sitting there, waiting for me to make it go into production manually. Thanks!
