Hi, lovely people,
Informix statement (True??):
"Informix Dynamic Server, Linux Edition Suite is certified to run on
kernel 2.2.5, glibc 2.1.1."

Well in fact: IT DOES NOT AT ALL!!.
IIF2000 + Kernel2.2.13 + glibc2.1.2 + SuSE6.3 = HANGS System!!
It only runs for the first time under "oninit -i".
Even if you configure server for a 50MB Root rootdbs, with default
ONCONFIG parameters, with a "ONIPCSHM" connection and nothing else,
without any further change also, and just immediatly after "onmode -m",
waiting of course to sysmaster/sysutils auto build complete, stop
gracefully the server wich it does normally.
If you stop the Server, and then you try to start it again you OBTAIN A
COMPLETE SYSTEM HANG.
No way to send any command to the system, YOU CANNOT by any means, not
by telnet, not by any other tty, not nothing, only solution is to RESET
the machine.
Only interaction you can do is Alt+Fn to switch tty views, and just see
old system output just before your oninit (nothing of use).
If you restart Linux and try again, again COMPLETE SYSTEM HANG (FRITO).
Exactly the same if you give a "oninit -s", again COMPLETE SYSTEM HANG
(FRITO).
Afterwards you try to obtain any (even minimal) clue of what did
happened, and you find out that even the LOGGING TASK HANG (FRITO), so
no clue.
Can't see shared memory state because it is in a COMPLETE SYSTEM HANG
(FRITO).
Can't guess the cause, because it gives a very clean appearance on logs
and every where else just the first time, just on "oninit -i" followed
by "onmode -m", given by command or under onmonitor.
So, there you are trying, stupidly, to make any usefull work with this
pretended to be wonderful peace of software.
Any clues??, might be helpfull (maybe Informix Support??), every body
wellcome.
If there are any responses to thread i'll give the complete details (i'm
not new to IDS, just in fact i have IDS7.3 up and running, full speed
and tunned on other machine, with same Linux basic hard and soft
config).
Well, just a bit, IDS=IIF-9.20.UC1-1 (59.527.845 bytes/Nov 17 1999
08:35:25), only this one installed (IDS.RPM).
Of course i've got Answers Online 3.2 CD-ROM and did read a full of it.
Please do not post until you are sure of what you state, and you are
sure you are not kidding!!
This News system is a very valuable resource that we must keep clean and
usefull.
Best regards,

Eduardo,
Your difficulty may be in the use of shared memory? Possibly try setting up
a TCP/IP connection? I, to be quite honest have been with Informix for
serveral years and have not experienced any difficulties ( except a few of
course ) with setup, installation or support with the Linux port. In fact,
I rarely recieve any problems with Linux at all. So long as the environment
is kept clean and updated ( updated kernel and libraries are installed ).
I have just installed IIF2000 on my Redhat 6.1 ( updated to 2.2.14 kernel )
and I have no problems. It is running extremely well to be quite honest and
have not had any problems. Have been running Java, C++ programs and the
like.
Try re-installing the binary's. Be sure to check your environment variables
( INFORMIXSERVER and INFORMIXDIR ) to be sure you are not overwritting
another instance. Try updating your kernel as your libraries seem to be up
to date. If none of that works, let me know. Are you using ( simulated raw
chunks or files? -- I say simulated because Linux does not support raw disks
( character devices ) Just curious. Check permissions on these as well ( I
guess you wouldn't get through the initialization if the files did not have
the correct permissions on them.
Don't give up quite so easily. Informix has its quirks but in all, I prefer
Informix over many other vendors. It is ( if things work out well ) one of
the easiest and most strongest vendors out on the market today. Really, I
am not a sales guy, just have been working with Informix for a while and
prefer it over others.
In the meantime, if you would like to post your ONCONFIG file, I can take a
look at it ( as others ) to see if there are loop holes that you may have
missed. Often happens to the best of us :)
HTH,
Lloyd Wilson

IIF2000 + Kernel2.2.5 + glibc 2.1.1 = Redhat 6.0.

Yes, I rebooted and tried an oninit -v. System reached
<init this>
<init database partition something>
verbose mode 5
(The last message before it goes into background and no errors).
And then the system hung.

I have given up trying to get IDS2K9.2UC1 running with any reliablilty on SuSE6.3 and 6.4. Have moved all my development to RedHat and have no problems. Well Actually I cant get wvdial to allowed access from wget! thats another story Regards Ian Pellew Elic UK > Eduardo Carriles wrote: > > > > "Informix Dynamic Server, Linux Edition Suite is certified to run on > > kernel 2.2.5, glibc 2.1.1." > > [...] > > IIF2000 + Kernel2.2.13 + glibc2.1.2 + SuSE6.3 = HANGS System!! > > Well, kernel 2.2.13 is not kernel 2.2.5 and glibc 2.1.2 is not 2.1.1. > -- > Pozdrav, > Roman
