They don't have to upgrade the tools at the same time, but they WANT to, whether they know it or not ;-). There are 6.00 tools in the porting list with the 6.00 engines. The standard method of communication with the engine has changed from pipes (4.0,4.1,5.0) to (I think) shared memory (6.0, 7.0) for DSA to work more efficiently.
