If you are not using any data on this partition (hdb5) you just have to unmount it and to remove it from the /etc/filesys (sorry, I don't remember where is it on Linux). Then as you said you have to make a sym link to the hdb5 device and you can use it. Anyway, you can repartition your disk usning fdisk (and I think it could be done online). A more simple way is just to make an empty file on the mounted filesystem and use it as cooked space (anyway Linux doesn't support yet in its standard configurations raw disk spaces as I know).
