This sort of thing invariably indicates an incorrectly installed product.
The SUID root permissions on the OnLine engine are not working -- either
because the program has incorrect permissions or because it is mounted on
some sort of file system which doesn't allow SUID programs. Either will
cause the trouble.
You should never have ordinary users running with group informix as one of
the groups they belong to. No-one needs such privileges except the
informix login.
