What does on mean

Hello to all,
Just trying to work out why commands begins with on? For example oninit,
onmode etc. I figure its because Dynamic Server uses on (as per the nettype).
Therefore,
In the nettype the first part asks for on or se, now I worked out that se
stands for Standard Edition but what does on stand for? Or mean?
Any help would be appreciated.

"On" stands for Online, Darren. Cheers Srinivas Kolli
Darren -- I think that "on" comes from "Online" which was the successor (or at least a later version of Informix RDB) to "turbo," which led to the earlier generation of tools being "tbXXXXX" instead of "onXXXX"). IDS 5.x, perhaps, was where "on" begain to appear with the occasional tool still having the old name (in the early 1990s). I am sure a google search or perusal of the IDS site's Informix history would be more accurate than my perhaps addled memories. Greg Williamson DBA GlobeXplorer LLC
Could someone explain why I'm getting these? I'm quite familiar with what "on" means and I don't recall sending a question asking what on means. Way back
when Informix was Informix turbo (I think that was the name) thus
in version 5 the utilities were called tbxxx (tbmode, tbstat, etc.) Of
course version 5 was called Informix OnLine. It kept the tb in version 6
(I'm not sure who actually used version 6) but when version 7 (multi
threaded model) came out the major change took advantage of getting rid the
turbo thing out of the utility names and changed to onXXX for OnLine.
