SCO Open Server and Informix 7.3 - How far can I go with this platform??

I'm running Informix 7.3 on SCO OpenServer 5.0.5. We are using a Dell 6300 Server which has 4 Xeon 400mhz 1meg cache chips. The server has 4 gig of Ram and raid 5 10,000 rpm disks (Yes I know I need Raid 1+0). The server does order entry, financials, warehousing etc. for around 130 concurrent users. The question/problem is we bought a company and will be doubling the user count in coming months. The server is having problems related to kernel tuning when you do a netstat -m. We are having usocket errors and failures in mblks. SCO seems to have no answers but to blame it on Informix and we paid Informix to look at the system and basically blame it on SCO. Gee what a surprise! Bottom line is the server dies at least once a day and requires a reboot. Is Solaris 7 for the Intel platform a better solution? Do I really need to goto a UltraSparc platform? I priced out a 4 chip UltraSparc and was in the 250K area with DLT, 4 gig, 18 drives (18 gig each) and other stuff (rack, Veratas etc). The config is around 3 times more costly than a similiar Intel XEON server. I'm just looking for any input that some of you have had with the various platforms. Thanks Gary Quiring
Hello, I don't have similar problems, but my customer don't put that much load on their SCO Openserver systems - usually 60 - 80 users. Please re-post the info with some configuration parameters on SCO newsgroup (both Openserver "misc" and "unixware"). Maybe some people will help you with this problem. Also - do you have to run everything on one server, or is there a possibility of splitting load onto two machines. We use Informix on SCO OpenServer 5.0.5 too. We do not have your load and your problems. The next generation for SCO is UnixWare 7. I would consider it. The only problem I see for now, that Informix do not support it that much. It seems to be the last platform to get new versions on. But if you are lucky with 7.30 UnixWare 7 is ok. Tommi
I am running SCO 5.0.4 on a Dual XEON 500's 512cache with 512Mb Ram and 6 (10K Rpm) 4.5Gs SCSI drives, 1 DAT and 1 DLT IV tape drives, and (2)Intel PRO100+ NIC's and am using Infx IDS 7.30 I avg about 50 -65 users. I am also running am simular suite of apps (order mgmnt./warehouse mgmnt and financials. I also have (<20) ODBC connections to the Infx server. My server platform is a Gateway ALR8200. I have had NO problems with this config (I avg about 40% utilization for about 16hrs a day, 5 days a week). This sysytem rarely (1-2x /mnth) has problems. I did experience MANY problems on my IBM NETFINITY7000's (Quad P-PRO200's, 712MbRam,14 - 4.5Gb SCSI drives), in fact the last crash finnally persuded managemnt to dump that piece of trash....!! We now have double the load on our 1 Gateway ALR with a huge performance increase. It would be nice to have ALL of the IECC tools available for SCO..... It is a little frustrating to go to Informix training and be told about all of the utilities/tools available - except on SCO! We just received 7.31 this week, and were informied by our software vendor that we should be thinking about moving to Unixware... We are NOT that happy with SCO. Try FreeBSD, Linux, etc
