Informix IDS Beta on SuSE 10.2 Pentium III
Posted in 2007
A user installing the IDS 11 (Cheetah) beta on SuSE 10.2 found the installer failed — first because the custom ROOTPATH directory didn't exist, then because the demo instance wouldn't come up (INFORMIXDIR was unset). Replies noted the product install itself had actually succeeded and only the demo instance initialization failed. The fix: source /opt/IBM/informix/demo/server/profile_settings to set INFORMIXDIR, PATH, INFORMIXSERVER and ONCONFIG, then run 'oninit -ivy'. The server initialized and came online; remaining comments were about the installer doing better pre-checks.
Auto-generated by DrWatson from the posts below — may be imperfect; read the full thread.
Topics: Installation, Setup & Upgrades, Storage & Space Management, Stored Procedures & SPL, Connectivity: ODBC / JDBC / .NET, Connectivity: ESQL/C, 4GL & Embedded SQL, Server Administration, Security, Permissions & Auditing, Licensing & Editions, Java & JDBC Development, Internationalization & Character Sets
I attempted to install Informix IDS Beta on SuSE 10.2. But it crapped out twice, and would not complete the installation.
Facts
1. I created user informix and group informix before installation.
2. INFORMIXDIR unset
First time I installed it failed because I changed the default location for the rootdbs. It errored out because the directory didn't exist. OK, so fine, they could have put a "mkdir -p /data/informix/demo" to create the directory in case it didn't exist.
So, second install, I created the /data/informix/demo directory to create the rootdbs, before running the installation.
What follows is the output of the whole doggone installation. If you have any children in the room, cover their eyes.
( Trying to be dramatic here :-)
INFORMIXDIR was unset now that I think of it. Maybe that's what caused the problem?
( I would think this should be set internally in the installation. )

I had a similar reaction to my first install of 10 on Linux. I sent a
fairly stern note which wound up with the install team. Take a couple of
minutes and describe in your own words your frustrations with the process, I
want to capture and forward them on.

Then, as I got down to just the roach, I put it out, blew my last big breathe of smoke, and typed in ./install_ids. At this point I watched the whole process unfold, it was in boring black and white, and it spoke to me. Yes, that's it, I heard God speak, saying YOU'RE WASTING YOUR TIME. But no, I stayed with it, despite heavenly advice, and pushed on. As I look back on it, yes, I was disappointed. But not in the install, I was disappointed that my glass of whiskey was dry. Now _that_ was a disappointment. So, that's my frustration at this point, I hope the install team will understand. :-) Seriously if they would make the install a bit more intelligent I think they've got a chance. It needs to do a little more checking on things before the installation begins. -t-
Hi Tool,
How about the following ?
1. source /opt/IBM/informix/demo/server/profile_settings.csh
OR
. /opt/IBM/informix/demo/server/profile_settings
probably the following enviroment variable will be set.
INFORMIXDIR=/opt/IBM/informix
PATH=$PATH:/opt/IBM/informix/bin
INFORMIXSERVER=demo_on
ONCONFIG=onconfig.demo_on
2. now, execute oninit -ivy
Probably you can see the error while oninit is initializing.
Regards.

Looks like installation completed successfully and the demo instance
initialization failed.
Can you successfully initialize an engine manually?
You might want to post this to the Cheetah Test Run Support Forum at
http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/forums/dw_forum.jsp?forum=1071&cat=19 if
you haven't already. Someone monitoring that forum might be able to better
explain what happened.

Cool! That's useful! I'm sure the install team will be able to use your suggestions to provide a less frustrating experience. I'm unsure how they'll be able to enable you to download Ganja and/or Black Velvet, but I'm sure that with your expert input they'll get right on it. How were the Britney Spears tunes? Should those be included in the download? As Mp3s or wavs? j. -----Original Message----- From: informix-list-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:informix-list-bounces@iiug.org]On Behalf Of Tool Sent: Wednesday, March 14, 2007 9:46 PM To: informix-list@iiug.org Subject: Re: Informix IDS Beta on SuSE 10.2 Pentium III Jack Parker wrote: > I had a similar reaction to my first install of 10 on Linux. -t- _______________________________________________ Informix-list mailing list Informix-list@iiug.org http://www.iiug.org/mailman/listinfo/informix-list

I regret that I don't have any Brittany Spears music in my collection. However, I do think the installation folks need to take a look at the section of the installation where you get to pick your directory for the rootdbs. That's the point where I found the smoke to really help since that's where the installation seemed to fail. Maybe too, if the marketing department would smoke a little we'd see some really good ads. ;-) -t- Jack Parker wrote: > Cool! That's useful! Well, my hard drive may not have enough space for Oracle. Doesn't Oracle take up something like 5GB of space? And I think my little Pentium III pooch would probably die trying to run it. I've got MySQL and Informix, what else do I really need? Obnoxio The Clown wrote: > Tool said: >> INFORMIXDIR was unset now that I think of it. The issue was reported to the Cheetah Beta Forum and will be looked at by IBM. It would appear that they were glad to recieve the input, a small fee for being able to play with the new engine for free before it is officially released. -------- Thank you for taking the time to post this issue. I acknowledge that this is a problem with the installer. As a member of the IDS Install Development Team, I will ensure that we look into it right away. We greatly value your input. Please do not hesitate to post more of your issues or ideas. Regards, Paul-John A. I don't think that I blew off Madison's note, but I'm sorry if you think I did, because I would have done a much better job of it if that was my intent. Now back to the point you seek... I already fully described my issues and helped the community. I don't feel like doing it all over again over at the IBM forum. I also have trouble understanding people that have unlimited access to the internal team telling people to post over at the forum site about an issue with the beta, when lo and behold, they have the information to tell Informix people what the problem is right here. It's not logical to expect me to post in the forum when I've already posted here. And by the way, I got really quick help here that allowed me to get the engine up and running. This forum has just as much value as the IBM forum, the big difference is that IBM can't own a usenet newsgroup, which is probably at the heart of the matter. Forums are important, but not just the ones owned by IBM. IBM people need to think outside the IBM box. In IBM thinking the whole world is insignificant unless it's IBM's idea. Gee I think I saw that somewhere else before! -t-
No, no hostility at all. No time or interest in it. Just trying to point out the time savings we could have all enjoyed if you had offered help to the team that requested it. If that wasn't "blowing off" Madison's note, then I'm not sure what else it could have been. I would respectfully suggest that your description of your issues was not complete enough for an engineering team to work from. Perhaps why we were all treated to an IBM employee popping over to ask for your formal input. I suspect that you could just write Datta and tell him how to recreate your issues without actually posting to the other forum. I am delighted that you got enough information from this group, it has always been very helpful to us all - and to the engineers as well, especially when a problem is described in enough detail that it can be addressed and corrected. j. -----Original Message----- From: informix-list-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:informix-list-bounces@iiug.org]On Behalf Of Tool Sent: Friday, March 16, 2007 12:18 AM To: informix-list@iiug.org Subject: Re: Informix IDS Beta on SuSE 10.2 Pentium III Jack Parker wrote: > And in the time it took you to blow off Madison's note and blow off the > other offers to receive your input, you could have fully described your > issues and helped the community. > > I'm sorry, did you have a point? > > j. > Jack, I'm sensing some hostility here. You don't understand, do you? IBM places no value on input from employees. It only places value on input from customers. I've been amazed that when I've spoken to my "friends in high places" in IBM how little influence they have compared to the lowliest customer. Such as myself. :o) -- Bye now, Obnoxio "I'm astonished anyone pays real money for this crap." -- Cosmo -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by OpenProtect(http://www.openprotect.com), and is believed to be clean.

Unfortunately, blowing Madison off isn't going to change that. Perhaps you could, as a customer, convey that to IBM? :o) -- Bye now, Obnoxio "I'm astonished anyone pays real money for this crap." -- Cosmo -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by OpenProtect(http://www.openprotect.com), and is believed to be clean.
