Item Subject: Anyone using Powerbuilder and Informix? Hi Roger, Yes there are other Powerbuilder/Informix users out there! Anyway, to address your specific questions: 1. Using text fields within Datawindows -- there is no direct way to insert a text field, you need to use the OLE2.0 function insert a BLOB field into a Datawindow. A source of information about this is the Powerbuilder Infobase CD which is a compilation of all the support calls that Powerbuilder's Tech support gets and is released on a quarterly basis. It may also be accessible off their Web site (http://www.powersoft.com) I recently found a bunch of info on one of their CD on using BLOBS for text fields . 2. Updating Text Fields -- To Update a text field, you need to use the UPDATEBLOB function in Powerbuilder. Similarly, to select a text field into a blob datawindow column, you use the SELECTBLOB function. You can find more information on that in the online help within Powerbuilder. Below are a couple of calls taken off the Infobase CD that you might find relevant: ******************************************************************** Issue: 220193 Date opened: 06/08/95 Date closed: 06/14/95 Product:PowerBuilder EE 4.0.01 Platform: Intel Operating System: WIN 3.1 Description: INFORMIX OnLine 6.0 - Selecting a column of datatype text and place it in a dw. Error: columns datatype is not supported Solution: Text Datatypes are BLOBs with INFORMIX. ********************************************************************* Issue: 181354 Date opened: 02/10/95 Date closed: 02/10/95 Product:PowerBuilder EE 3.0 Platform: Intel Operating System: WIN 3.1 Description: INFORMIX on line in pb4. data type called TEXT is supported but only for 231 char or less. this is unacceptable! What is PowerBuilder doing to address this? Solution: This is an on-line documentation error. It is actually 2^31bytes not 231. Meaning it is fully supported as a BLOB datatype and can be used in a OLE BLOB column on a DataWindow. (two to the 31st is what I mean by 2^31) ********************************************************************** Hope this helps! Author: Non-HP-informix-list-owner (informix-list-owner@rmy.emory.edu) at HP-Boise,shargw4 Date: 8/9/96 10:07 AM Hi! I am extremely frustrated by the lack of information available about using Powerbuilder with Informix. For example, the manual says the TEXT field is supported but the datawindow doesn't seem to know that, nor does the DB painter. Neither of these know how to update a TEXT column. I cannot get ANYONE to say if this is a bug or a feature... Can anyone point me at a Whitepaper or a good book? Is anyone using PB and Informix or should I not use these together? (Maybe PB only works well with Sybase products...) TIA for ANY information! Roger Meyers roger@stratsoft.com Strategic Software Solutions, San Francisco, CA
