Strw Poll : I-4GL for NT
Posted in 1997
For those of you running I-4GL on UNIX (or DOS), would a port of genuine I-4GL to NT be of use to you? I'm talking about the real Informix thing, not 4Js (an excellent product, by the way) or any other clone/extension. What you'd get : I-4GL compiler for NT A Commercial Telnet daemon for NT What you would not get : The 4GL debugger (sorry) How you'd work : Develop and debug under UNIX Re-compile under NT using 32bit Microsoft C/C++ compiler How you'd deploy : Ship I-4GL runtime, ODS for NT (optional) and your app Install & configure Telnet daemon Users telnet into NT box as if it were a UNIX host Voila! your 4GL app now runs on NT If you are interested, would you use it as a stop-gap whilst you move your apps to C++, Java, Delphi, NewEra and so on, or would you want to run on this platform until your app dies a natural death? One thing to consider: Many existing 4GL apps have a considerable amount of what I call "application maintenance" code in them, forms and code that is *only* used by the application administrator. If you can delay porting this code to a GUI client server system by running 4GL on NT, then you can put your resources into getting the part of the application that the real end users see converted asap and get to market double quick. Let me know what you think. -- David _________________________________________________________ David C. Harrison Managing Director DCH Software Ltd.
