ODBC and VB, whats this then?

INFORMIX ODBC Driver Version 3.31 NT4
We are experimenting in the new ( to us) brave world of VB development
accessing our Unix IDS. When the application first connects to the database
it executes a massive SELECT stmnt against systables, see onstat -g ses info
below. Presumably this is gathering schema info for the database. Given
that this is an application not a dynamic access tool, I.e. the programmer
knows the schema and codes accordingly, is there some way of disabling this
option? Or am I barking up the wrong tree, probably in the wrong forest as
well? :o/
TIA.
