Question about database recovery

When recoverying an Informix database, I need level 0 archive tape and logical backup tape . I have two informix databases with same configuration(one is working database ,one is backup database) and I want them to keep same , If in an time point , I have recovered two databases to a same stage, then, one database(working database) continues to change , in this process, the working database will record the changes in it's logical log one after another and stores the log in it's logical dbspace, my purpose is : when the working database completes a logical log , can I get(retrive) the logical log from the working database in some way and transfer it to the backup database to recorver the data? You may ask me why not I use Informix database replication. my problem is the communication condition. without good communication condition , database replication may influence the working efficiency. Can you help me? Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy.
Answer to your question is yes you can do it.
I've done that before with ontape utility. But also there are some
restrictions.First and biggest problem (don't know it's a problem for you
or not ) is you'll have to keep your backup (secondary database/system) in
fast recovery mode.
This means you can not bring the instance up and roll forward logical logs
whenever you want and should stay in accessible.
Easy task is as you said.Backup up the primary database. Also start logical
log backup. Then restore it to secondary server at the end of restore when
informix asks you for logical log restore/recovery say yes and use the
correct logical log backup(keep numbers labeled properly) for recovery. The
idea is if the primary fails, you can bring up secondary in very short
time.I'd also recommend you to make extreme testing for your case.
P.S:The platform for informix was :
IDS 7.X on UNIX

Thank you very much. Suppose the logical log size is 2M and the log
dbspace is 500M , what I want to do is: when a logical log (not logical
buffer in memory) is complete, can I retrive a "single" logical log
from the log dbspace (that is the key point)and transfer it to the
backup server ?In backup server site, can I recombine( this is also the
key point) the logical logs in sequence and use it in recovery? Do you
have any tools to help me? Or can you tell me the structure of INFORMIX
log dbspace ^_^ ?

Before you buy.
Robert,
What you have just described is EXACTLY what the automatic backup with OnBar
provides. OnBar is a part of the basic Informix package.

Yes if you use the ALARMPROGRAM to run ontape -a or onbar -l backing up the
logical logs to disk you will get a disk file with one (or a two after a
backup failure or crash) logical log file in it. Yes also you can append
several of these together to create a useable multi-log archive that can
be restored with ontape or onbar and you can transfer the files to the
backup machine and restore them there along with the last backup.
