RE: More processors or more MHz?
Posted in 1997
Two processors of 120MHZ could be just fine, first, you will balance the work across the two processors, which can be executing some different=20 taks, even if those tasks doesn=B4t belong to any Informix products, = Unix itself will take advantage over two processors. If you have one 180Mhz, = you will not balance the work, because there is only one processor, even if=20 it is a faster CPU. However, keep in mind that your machine with two processors must be configured as a single processor machine in Informix, otherwise would exist the overhead of context switching. I'm trying to price an HP9000 K-series for an Informix database, and I'm not sure how the tradeoffs work out. For example, would Informix be happier with a single 180MHz processor or a pair of 120MHz's? Are there issues about how the data is going to be used that would tip the balance one way or the other, and if so, what should I be looking at?
