Import / Export

Hi,
we need to pull out data from an informix database
(Informix 7, SCO Unix) and transfer it to a Linux system
(Informix SE, SuSE Linux distribution V6.2).
As far as we know, one would use the dbexport/dbimport
utilities, but unfortunately there is no documentation
available in the Linux distribution and we have no access
to the original documentation.
Can anyone help, please? What are the correct statements
to export / import a whole database with all tables,
indices, views, etc.?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. We're new to
Informix and so any other information regarding it would
also be very helpful.
Thanks in advance.
Frank
Hi,
Dbimport / Dbexport are utilities from informix to do exaclty as the name
implies ... database imports and database exports.
These utilties are used to do exactly what you are requiring. They will take
the data from within a particular server ... export to ascii text ... the
database schema and data ... to allow for importing to a new or existing
server or just to have ... for other purposes such as ie. backups etc..
If you type dbimport or dbexport ... you will see a list of options used
with these utilities to aid in the process in which you are striving for
either importing or exporting.
When running dbexport ... you will notice that in the current directory in
which you run it.... the utility creates a file called dbexport.out and
<dbname>.exp . Dbimport creates a log file called dbimport.out.
The .exp directory contains your database schema and data files used to
import the database to a new server or which ever you are doing.
The dbimport utilty is used by taking the .exp directory and using the
schema file to generate and populate your database <dbname>.sql in your .exp
directory.
The simpliest of commands are:
dbimport <dbname> -d <dbspace>
dbexport <dbname> -ss
Note: When importing a logging database ... keep logging turned off (its
faster) until the export is complete ... then turn logging on by running
this command.:
ontape -s -B <dbname> or
ontape -s -U <dbname>
whichever you prefer.
You really should read the manuals (pdf's) and such as they describe more
for you than this newsgroup. ( you can get them at
http://www.informix.com/answers/ )
That should get you started though.
