The engine has to be brought up with LTAPEDEV set to /dev/null.
If you just change LTAPEDEV in onconfig or onmonitor it does mark the logs
as backed up.
If you bounce with LTAPEDEV set to /dev/null logs are marked as backed up.

No; that's the advantage of /dev/null (or NUL on NT).
All my toy systems (meaning all my OnLine instances) run with LTAPEDEV
to /dev/null so I don't have to worry about this.
