onmode -l oddity
Posted in 2011
On IDS 11.50.FC8, running 'onmode -l' seemed to keep rolling to new logical logs continuously until the server was shut down. Art Kagel said he'd never seen it and suggested calling tech support, but noted an ALARMPROGRAM script could cause it if it switches logs itself. The poster then found the cause: his log-backup script piped 'yes' into 'ontape -a', so the automatic 'y' answers triggered additional log switches. Changing it (e.g. feeding 'n' instead via 'yes | tr y n') fixed the loop.

We have an informix server (IBM Informix Dynamic Server Version
11.50.FC8 ) that seems to behave strangely when you run onmode -l.
Instead of moving to the next logical log, it appears to keep completing
logs until you shut the server down. Any thoughts or suggestions on
what to check?

Would having alarmprogram.sh setup to automatically backup logical logs
cause this kind of an issue?

I haven't seen that behavior, but it is absolutely a reason to call tech
support.

Only if it's programmed to change logs (ie run onmode -l again) before/after
backing it up.

You could say, I'm an idiot:
yes | ${ONTAPE} -a
Which appears to cause it to complete the current log. Taking out the
yes gets rid of my problem. I'm not sure why I didn't notice it
earlier.
