This is a common "infamous" problem with most ODBC drivers, esp. those client-based ODBC driver like CLI or Intersolv ODBC that relies on native driver (such as I-Net, or Oracle SQL*Net) to connect to database, when dealing with text field. Try OpenPath ODBC (www.openpath.com). They're served based, and are exceptional good in handling BLOB or TEXT field. Give it a try. Our clients like it.
