Help with 4GL: prepared inserts
Posted in 1993
I'm currently running an evaluation copy of informix 4GL 4.11.UC1 on sun. I ran into this problem, that their tech support has admitted to being a problem, but somehow its status hasn't been upgraded to a "bug". Anyway... In my program I'm trying to do an insert to a table whose name is not predetermined. I know the schema of the table but not the name of it, that's determined in runtime. I can select from that table by preparing select statements and declaring a cursor for them. When I want to insert into it, things break. I follow the same reasoning and prepare an insert statement and then execute it (I even tried with a cursor and the put command). It always gives me a -201 error at runtime, even with the table name hardcoded in! But when I run the insert with a hardcoded table name without preparing it (i.e. by having insert as a command in the program) then it works just fine! Does anybody know a way to execute prepared insert statements? If not, is there an alternative way of inserting to a table of a non-predetermined name? Am I the only one that hates those generic -201 syntax error messages? Thanks in advance for the responses. John Droggitis Bell Communications Research johnd@leis.bellcore.com
