It is common, and is now supported by Informix. That said,
the responsibility for accomodating the ontape program is yours
when you decide to use a disk. There must be enough space on the
disk to hold all that you wish to back up, or the program will ask
you for a new "tape", (many times per second, filling up the disk
that contains the output of the ontape program as well.) You
also have to respond to the program's prompts, which can be a
little tricky in unix.
See the Software Library at the International Informix Users Group
web site for sample code. http://www.iiug.org
You can also use a newsgroup reader to find the answers to the
same question over the years. I like dejanews at
http://www.dejanews.com , or the IIUG also provides a search
facility.
Note that with version 7.3 Informix will be supplying its own
storage manager, called ISM, to work with onbar. Ontape will still
be available, as will onarchive.
