Changing datatypes of existing field?

I need to change the datatype of an EXISTING field from "char" to "text" (moving from SE to OnLine) and apparently have to copy all the db's existing field entries out, remove the "char" field, replace it with the "text" field and then copy all the field entries back.......? Has anyone faced this situation?.......and can offer advice?
