Solaris Dual Core CPU

We have just upgraded our servers from 16 CPU Sun 6800's to 24 CPU Sun 6900's; This is an O/S and hardware enhancement in which all of the new CPU's are dual core. Theoretically there are 32 CPU's in each server, even though there is only space for 24 physical CPU's. My question is, should I use the number of physical CPU's -1 in the onconfig file or the number of virtual CPU's -1 ? I'd like to use 31 - it sounds a lot better than 23 :) Regards Colin There are 10 types of people in the world, those that understand binary and those that don't

I think you could at least use 31. We run 16 more CPUVPs than we have on our old Alpha box. We have found that it runs our system better. We have a 32 way box and run 48 CPUVPs. Does anyone else run more CPUVPs than CPU's?
We do but not on that scale. Our largest server's are only a 4-way and the rest are 2-ways. We run 1.5 to 2 times the number of physical CPU's and have no issues. In fact our development server is a 4-way and we have a total of 14 CPU VP's, they are split among several instances but still it's a lot for one machine. Processors are fast enough these days that I don't realy think that the #CPU-1 formula still applies, especially in a dual core environment, which BTW we do not have. If I had dual core machines it's likely that I'd run even more CPU VP's and not see any issues.
