Why do you want to shut Informix down? Informix is quite capable of taking
an archive while the server is up.

To shutdown IDS, use onmode:
onmode -kmsuy
-k Shutdown completely
-m Go to multi-user on-line
-s Shutdown to single user -u Shutdown and kill all attached sessions
-y Do not require confirmation
So you might use onmode -ky if you wanted to shut the server down
completely.
To start IDS, use oninit with no parameters.
However, I don't know how your server and backups are set up, are you using
onbar for archiving Informix, or are you using Networker to backup the raw
disk partitions (or something like that)?
Why am I being so nice to you? It's all in the manuals at
http://www.informix.com/answers/ :-)
I know. It's Tiffany. I always was a sucker for a Tiffany... :-)
