In article <323F108B.1D43@industry.net>, james.carlisle@industry.net says... > >We are considering whether or not to code our C language database >applications in Embedded SQL instead of using the native API calls >(currently Sybase Open Client). Does anybody have an opinion on which >method is better? I've used both approaches with Sybase, and ESQL with Ingres and Oracle. Developer productivity is much, much higher with ESQL, and the learning curve is much, much shorter. >Our initial testing shows the APIs to have much better performance... I'm a little surprised to hear this. Each implementation of ESQL has ways to improve performance, but that reduces portability. >the ESQL programs but we are also concerned about portability between >hardware platforms (RS/6000, AS/400, NT), migrating to different >databases (Oracle, Informix, etc...), and programmer considerations >(ease of use, learning curves, etc...). I've ported COBOL from DB2 to Oracle, and Ingres to Oracle, and it was quite easy (except that DB2 ESQL COBOL programmes don't have a declare section...) because the ESQL was the same or similar. Even porting between languages is easy. -- John Little Auckland, New Zealand, phone (64) (9) 575 4621 e-mail jlittle@iconz.co.nz
