shmmax syntax in onconfig file

SA here that needs to set the shared memory for Informix. I am not worried about performance at this point, just need to be able to get the informix server to start. The onconfig file syntax is a bit odd. All I want to set is approximately 4gb of shared memory. "WARNING: server initialization failed, or possibly timed out (if -w was used). Despite the error in the log, shared memory is not your problem here. The file for the root dbspace does not exist. You are using the delivered onconfig file by the looks of it, and that expects an empty file to exist in the location specified by ROOTPATH - which you have set as $INFORMIXDIR/tmp/demo_on.rootdbs Either that, or you have not pointed the environment variable ONCONFIG to the name of an onconfig file that you have modified. If you want to continue with the default ROOTPATH, you will need to create the file. Assuming that you have the directory /opt/IBM/informix/tmp created already, you will need to: cd /opt/IBM/informix/tmp touch demo_on.rootdbs chown informix:informix demo_on.rootdbs chmod 660 demo_on.rootdbs This is just to get something up and running. Best practices would be to create the file elsewhere in a directory that will store all your space, then create a symbolic link to the file and have ROOTPATH reference that.
