The two companies have also signed an agreement whereby Transarc will distribute the MAGNA X second generation client/server application development environment. An Early Entry Program for Encina users will begin on April 1, 1995. According to Dr. Alfred Spector, president and CEO of Transarc, MAGNA X fills a critical need for the traditional MIS manager looking to minimize the risks involved in migrating to Encina. It can be easily learned by experienced COBOL programmers, enabling developers to quickly generate Encina applications. This means that a familiar development path now exists to create mission-critical applications for client/server environments. Kent Lawson, president of Magna, added, Mainframe customers can now shorten the learning curve for building robust Encina applications by using a familiar programming style. And, they can leverage their recent investments in Visual Basic and PowerBuilder to extend those products for development of large-scale transactional systems.S He concludes, with MAGNA X for Encina, weve brought together the lowest risk method of developing high performance transaction processing systems, with the leading standards-based open TP monitor. Pricing and Availability Transarc will immediately start marketing MAGNA X to its Encina customers through its Transarc Sales Group. MAGNA X for Encina has a base price of $40,000. This price includes a development server license and five developer workstation licenses. For the Early Entry Program, the price is $20,000. What does MAGNA X offer? MAGNA X is the only application development tool that allows IS to immediately leverage the skills and knowledge of mainframe developers to create business-critical, high volume client/server applications. By taking advantage of the investment that has been made in proven technologies such as PowerBuilder, Visual Basic, COBOL and CICS, MAGNA X shortens the time to market for powerful second generation client/server systems that integrate PCs, UNIX servers and the mainframe. What does Encina provide? Encina is the industry leader for DCE-based, large-scale, client/server computing and OLTP solutions. It provides platform-independent transactional integrity, record-oriented file storage, X/Open standard database integration and secure mainframe connectivity.
