.Net Entity Framework with Informix
Answered: red (solid confidence) — Andrew never got Entity Framework working with Informix despite trying the suggested IBM Data Server ('DB2' DRDA) driver route; the thread ends with him giving up in frustration.

User unable to get Entity Framework 6 to display Informix as a data source option in Visual Studio 2017's Entity Data Model Wizard, despite installing Informix Client SDK and attempting to add IBM.Data.Informix.dll references. Response suggested using IBM Data Server Driver with DB2 provider (which supports DRDA connections to Informix), but user struggled with configuration and ultimately expressed frustration with Informix documentation.

Is anyone used Entity Framework 6 with an Informix database? No matter what I try in Visual Studio 2017 (Entity Data Model Wizard) I can not get an option for Informix to show up when selecting the Data Source/Provider. It only ever shows SQL Server. I already have .net applications connecting via odbc using InformixClient_SDK_4.10.TC6DE I have tried adding as a Reference both of the below but no luck. C:\\\\Program Files (x86)\\\\IBM Informix Client SDK\\\\bin\\ etf20\\\\IBM.Data.Informix.dll C:\\\\Program Files (x86)\\\\IBM Informix Client SDK\\\\bin\\ etf40\\\\IBM.Data.Informix.dll Any solutions would be great!
No Entity Framework support in Informix Client SDK - so far. You'd have to be using IBM Data Server Driver: https://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21385217 From: "ANDREW KELLY" <andrewpeterkelly@hotmail.com> To: ids@iiug.org Date: 01/17/2018 05:10 PM Subject: .Net Entity Framework with Informix [40509] Sent by: ids-bounces@iiug.org Is anyone used Entity Framework 6 with an Informix database? I tried this and still no luck. Installed IBM Visual Studio Addins "ibm_database_addins_for_visualstudio_v11.1.exe" which only supports VS2015 so had to install this as I now use VS2017. Installed IBM DATA SERVER DRIVER "ibm_data_server_driver_package_win64_v11.1.exe". In Visual Studio installed via NuGet "Entity Framework 6" and "EntityFramework.IBM.DB2". The "Entity Data Model Wizard" in VS still only shows the two SQL Server options. :/
Well, 'DB2' is what you're after in this case .... seriously :-S This was called 'common driver', for any server speaking DRDA, and guess who had picked the DB2 name space for this. You need to have a DRDA port configured on Informix server side. That all a bit over me but logically despite the Informix server being set up right or not to connect that would no effect Visual Studio and selecting the provider. That would have to be a local issue as .net us yet attempting to connect to anything.
The IBM site is terrible for looking up info. As much as I want to support Informix it's no wonder it has been dying a slow death for 20+ years with how difficult it is to get information to make anything to work with it. After seeing the MySQL website I am thinking of training on it just because their site makes it easy to get into and find answers.
