Informix IDS 7.3 will be moving to Category 4 by year end. Informix IDS 7.3.1 or later is not certified (yet) to run on any UnixWare version. Anyone has better news than this ? http://www.informix.com/informix/services/ilink/plc/plccat3.htm If not, should we move to Oracle or to Solaris/Linux/W2K ? I'm a die-hard "UNIX-on-Intel" (SCO's a favorite) and Informix person. . . . I would suggest waiting and seeing as long as you can. I have projects currently running on UW 7.1 and Informix IDS 7.30, and it really frosts my a$$ that Informix hasn't move forward with their ports. I fully understand their marketing push, so I can't blame them for concentrating on the "popular" platforms, but the "keeping up with the Jones'" attitude in the industry has driven a lot of good computing platforms into niche areas when they are no worse (and many times better) than the Suns, HPs, IBMs, etc out their today. If you're going to move and want to maintain your investment in Informix training and etc., then I would install Solaris x86. It seems to keep up with the Informix ports better than SCO's support, and Solaris being a System V version 4 variant is nearly identical to SCO's UnixWare 7 environment (except the admin tools). My main concern with Solaris x86 is trying to figure out Sun's long term plans. I don't have a problem with Linux. . . . mostly it just seems to get so much undeserved attention. . . . and it's much more a BSD UNIX like flavor than a System V flavored version, BUT, Informix has "ported" their engines and front-ends their. Ever try running Informix's Linux ports on UW, OSR5, or Sun using the Linux 'lxrun' utility? I haven't but if the Linux compatibility environment can run StarOffice in UW, then I wonder how well it would run the Informix Linux stuff. . . . . I've never developed in Oracle. . . . no better no worse than Informix, but personally I find much flexibility with Informix engines (like performing "hot" backups). > Thanh > > Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ > Before you buy. > Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy.

So we have the same "great" 4GL app, but running on newer hardware and OS will require IDS 9.2. Does "Certified" mean that we will get fixes for Unixware? Only time will tell. We are still looking for a "Workgroup edition" under 9.2. Moving from 7.30 Workgroup to 9.2 means an extra $300 per user (process?) in licensing costs. We keep buying functionality (and their associated patches) which is not being used.
