Perhaps that is not just incidental. The scriptures warn of using names
that could be confusing such as reserved and ambiguous words. See TFM:
Informix Guide to SQL: Syntax
Version 7.22, page 1-724
"Use of Reserved Words as Identifiers"
(Though I think this sermon is in other versions as well, I don't
have them at hand to check)
Among pages of good advice and workarounds you'll find a tip that says:
"If you recieve an error message that seems unrelated to the statement
that caused the error, check to see if that statement uses a reserved
word as an undelimited identifier."
