Re: Opinions on Informix

[WARNING: May offend sensitive viewers :-] >Oracle has a good rule-based optimizer, and a terrible cost-based optimizer. >Informix has a new unproved rule-based optimizer, and a good cost-based >optimizer. > >Do people agree? Not really. Informix *used* to have a good rule-based optimiser, which you could diddle all you like. If we're reverting back to rbo (which I must have missed somehow), I'm sure they've still got good technology for this. And you can still diddle the cbo, you just need to know how. :-) >Basically means that Oracle can be compared to a stick-transmission car, and >Informix to an automatic-transmission. I would say you could compare Oracle to a manual Edsel, and Informix to an automatic Ferarri, yes. :-) >If you know how to drive stick, it will beat an auto-transmission at the >stop lights hands down. But if you don't, you'll stall the engine. Hmmm...not sure if I agree with this. >If you know the Oracle rule-based optimizer really well, then you can tune >your SQL statements like mad and it will be lightning fast, in my opinion. I'd rather go for an engine that didn't need me to do all this and was still lightning fast. >In Korea Oracle dominates, with over 80% of the market share. Leaving aside >us Koreans' tendency to follow 'trends' like there's no tomorrow, Oracle Heh. I think Oracle is definitely the 800-pound gorilla of the DB market. I think they own mindshare around the world. I wish Informix did. Oracle wins because of this damn perception that they're the best, and they can screw around with everyone else's marketing, *because* _everyone_ knows who they are and what they do. (Diane, are you listening?) >basically has the image of a "hard-core DB" while "Informix is the economy >version." The trend is Oracle, and I heard people at Oracle headquarters >were themselves surprised at the rate which companies here gobbled up OPS >when it came out. Talk about overspending budgets... can you image a >1000-employee company purchasing a 256-user license with OPS for their >quasi-ERP that they are developing in-house? But I don't know about this "hard-core DB" stuff. More like "hard-core porn" ... yes: I say the F-word a lot more when I use Oracle. I use a lot of lubrication. There's lots of frenetic to-ing and fro-ing. Everything's out of focus. It usually ends up as a clusterf***. And I usually feel like I've been on the receiving end of a hot stud by the end of an Oracle project... 8-) -- "I'll Be Back" Obnoxio ************************************************ Sane?
