Here is a question. How long do you run between system shutdowns? Configuration: IBM RS6000 PowerServer 360 AIX 3.2.4 Informix-OnLine 4.10.UD2 (from the isql intro screen) What we have is a library automation system on this machine. Is there any reason, from the database perspective, why the machine should/would need to be rebooted on a daily, or every other day, schedule? I am not very familiar with databases and how they operate so any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks. Mark ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We also have a library automation system built on Informix OnLine 4.10 (Geac/CLSI Plus). It runs on a Sequent S450 operating DYNIX/ptx 1.4. We have gone as much as a week without shutting down the database server without a problem. We do, as a matter of routine, shut down the circulation system before doing the daily on-line archive but we have found that it isn't necessary. Shutting down the circ system doesn't shut down the server. We do shut down and restart the system whenever we have a problem with the circulation system or database server, as a precaution. Starting the circulation system does automatically run routines to update statistics on the high transaction tables, so if we don't restart it we have to run those routines manually. You didn't say what library software you run, but ours has the capability for "captive" ports, where the port is locked into the PAC program. We no longer use these because they caused too much trouble. They frequently locked up and the only thing that would clear them is a system reboot. ============================================================================= Ronald Taylor, Systems Manager Computer Services Lakeland Library Cooperative Grand Rapids, MI 49503 616-454-0272 ron@lolas2.lakeland.lib.mi.us
