Surprisingly enough root can start & stop IDS, or you can use su. You
usually create a file in somewhere like /etc/init.d, then link it to
files in /etc/rc0.d & /etc/rc3.d, assuming that run levels 0 & 3 are
shutdown and multi-user respectively. /etc maybe /sbin.
Just make sure that your environment is set correctly in this script.
