Was Linux used to schedule people and equipment? Was it used to handle the accounts and pay the people and vendors? >2. In the year 1998, 300 Million linux's will be installed! 300 million is a large number, more than one third of the combined populations of North America, Europe, Japan, and Australia. The year is almost 14% gone. Have 41 million already been installed so far this year? >3. Linux won the "The BEST Network Operating system" in year 1997 > See InfoWorld Jan 98 issue. Netscape's Standard Editions only, no different from IE being distributed with each and every Windows installation. Having lost Windows, Netscape has to go somewhere. Java is getting some momentum for clients, but Microsoft successfully delivered its Windows-only AFC while Sun's JFC is still coming soon, with Microsoft pledging not to support it. How many businesses actually use or plan to use TCL? Other than file, print, and web servers, how many businesses use Linux servers? How many business applications run on Linux servers? Even Larry Ellison has backed off NCs. Have you ever seen one in service? >6. Installation of Linux is much more easy now, because linux > can auto-detect most of the hardware. Comparable to Windows 95!! Windows 95 was better than 3.1, but hardly qualifies as good. Make it better than Mac and you will have something to brag about. >7. Linux on multi-processors scales much much better than windows NT > and it never crashes!! See the article at this site: > http://www.redhat.com It never crashes? Since when? >8. Only LINUX could withstand the "CRASH-OS" stress testing > and the following failed - NT, Windows 95. Windows 95, which was designed to run real mode DOS drivers and .EXE files, should not be expected to pass any stress test. NT, on the other hand, was designed from the ground up to be robust. Its first releases were pretty shaky, but its design mistakes and bugs are being fixed. Don't forget that early releases of Linux weren't too reliable, either. >9. Compare the costs of Linux v/s NT database servers. Cost factor > is more pronounced in case you use multiple boxes like production, > test, development database-server boxes. A representative of one of the major stock exchanges scoffed at a vendor's claim of 99.9% uptime. He said that's 10 hours per year of downtime, which is unacceptable. PostgreSQL is free, but does table locking, not even page locking. It does not support having, exists, outer joins, updatable views, unions, or many other features that many applications need, and has a list of known bugs even longer than Microsoft SQL Server's. SQL Server is cheap, but does page, not row locking, does not support a good deal of the 1992 ANSI spec, has a very stupid query optimizer, and is easily crashed. As database downtime and unreliability get ever more expensive in today's economy, the cost of doing business with IBM and Oracle gets ever more justified. We have heard that SQL Server 7, with its rumored release date once again moved later, is much better than the current version. Perhaps a year from now, it might start cutting into IBM's and Oracle's low end business, but since it only runs on NT, if SQL Server is any good, it will increase NT's credibility. Linux is a popular web server because Apache is an outstanding product that runs on Linux. Linux will not become a serious database server unless PostgreSQL or some other product gains some considerable maturity. >10. You can now purchase technical support (phone & email) for Linux > from http://www.redhat.com and http://www.caldera.com!! Big deal. Linux now has what proprietary operating systems have always had. >11. Last POINT is - If you DO NOT know linux than you will be > considered computer ILLITERATE !!!! So do not sit in dark! Considered illiterate by whom? I know Linux. At the moment, I don't know anyone who wants to pay me to use it. Tony Scandora, Argonne National Lab, 630-252-7541 scandora@cmt.anl.gov
