informix-list

A poster complained that replies sent to the IIUG mailing list (informix-list@iiug.org) were no longer appearing in the comp.databases.informix newsgroup, and sarcastically suggested shutting the gateway down. Others noted the gateway is volunteer-run and that email posting brings annoyances like auto-replies. Jonathan Leffler confirmed the email-to-news direction of the IIUG bi-directional gateway appeared broken since mid-October (apparently after a mail software change), reducing newsgroup volume, and said he had alerted IIUG board members. No fix is recorded in the thread.

Can anyone please shut the gateway down, hopefully for good. Let everyone post directly thru NNTP newsgroup c.d.i. Reason for provocation: To my post about ORacle.com switching from Oracle to Informix, I recvd 5 replies. These replies were sent to rkusenet and informix-list@iiug.org. Guess what, not a single post made it to c.d.i. Oracle must be too happy with yet another self destructing action of Informix :-) rk-

Oracle must be too happy with yet another >self destructing action of Informix :-) Not hardly . . . unless there have been changes, the gateway is set up through a voluntary organization . . . of course, Oracle and the Oracle user group have been the paragon of virtue and shining example of working together, I'd guess. (troll-bait ON) Not everyone has access to NNTP from work. . . then again, not everyone has access to offsite EMail either . . . Besides, it's probably not a big problem . . . just needs a bigger hammer. JWC DBA @ HOME

Maybe, but historically, there has been an email<->news bi-directional gateway run by the Internation Informix Users Group (IIUG - http://www.iiug.org), which echoes messages posted to comp.databases.informix to the mailing list, and messages sent to the mailing list to the news group. AFAICT, the link from mailing to news group is broken. Various other email lists have been broken for a number of weeks now - say all of October. I was told that some emailing software got changed. I'm more than a little surprised to find that it still appears to be broken. (I also had email sent to informix-list@iiug.org bounce - I used to be able to send to that alias from a couple of email addresses that are not subscribed, by a special arrangement, which no longer works). I also can't work out how to subscribe any email account other than my 'official IIUG member account' to the informix-list@iiug.org alias, which is irksome -- it makes it difficult to verify my perceptions, that the volume in c.d.i is down by a noticable margin, mainly because informix-list@iiug.org postings are not making it to the list. I've bcc'd this to a number of IIUG board members - hoping to get the cages rattled again. It is not the first time I've notified them of the problem. (To justify my observation that informix-list@iiug.org is no longer reaching comp.databases.informix, I observe that the latest date for which a message contains 'sending to informix-list@iiug.org' (which is the message (that used to be) put at the bottom of messages sent by the informix-list@iiug.org mailing list) is dated 16th October according to groups.google.com. Now, if the software changed, it could be that the markers are no longer present. But the volume still seems down.) -- Jonathan Leffler #include <disclaimer.h> Email: jleffler@earthlink.net, jleffler@us.ibm.com Guardian of DBD::Informix v2003.04 -- http://dbi.perl.org/
