The hot backup mode (data replication) works only with Informix 6.0 and greater. The backup site should be set up similarly. One catch is that if your database has BLOBs, this solution will not work for you as Informix does not buffer BLOB transactions to the logical logs. Informix' data replication in version 6 is very twitchy and procedures to set up replication must be done with precise timing. One good feature with data replication is that you can use the 'hot backup' site to perform read-only transactions (DSS). If you are sticking with Informix 5.x, you can use triggers, stored procedures, and two-phase-commits to do data replication.
