Re: PC to unix connection problems

Michael I am not an NT person, so my knowledge of NT is really limited. But there *is* a services file, structured the same as the Unix /etc/services, located in \\WinNT\\system32\\drivers\\etc on my machine at work running "NT client". In order for your NT based client to talk to the Unix server, you need to configure a service by adding something like: service_name nnnn/tcp in the services file. I dont know if you can also do it through the registry. For the remote users, the /etc/services file is augmented with an entry to say on which port informix is running. The problem is that we're in the process of introducing the same version of informix (I believe 9.14 UC4 but I'd have to double check) for PC's Initially we want to have a PC based server and development tools and allow pc based clients to connect to both, the pc and the unix server. Now, the pc connects to the pc without problems, unix to pc I've not tested and is not going to be used in the foreseeable future, but the pc to unix just plain refuses to work. Apparently, it desires to have an entry in the /etc/services file, except that in NT thats not there. I've tried playing with the keys in the registry a bit, but I'm at a loss. Its especially frustrating that the NT error dialog box is obviously a unix port since it specifically indicates the use of the /etc/services file, not any registry key. If anyone has been running such a setup, I'd appreciate some input on how to make the PC client code do a proper connect. If possible and convenient, please also reply be email to miki@ics.uci.edu, as with the traffic of this newsgroup sometimes its hard to find your own post :-). Thanks Michael P.S. I'm also not sure if I've got a problem in my unix setup. My understanding of the entry in /etc/services is that the client will lookup the port based on the service name on the machine on which the server runs. I think that client machines have no business accessing their local /etc/services to determine the port on the remote host, however this appears to be the case since removing the informix entry from /etc/services on a client machine makes it not connect to the server. Can anyone clarify this for me please? --- Michael Ortega-Binderberger miki@acm.org, miki@ics.uci.edu Department of Computer Science Office (949)824-7231, Fax (949)824-4056 U. of Illinois, Urbana Champaign http://www.ics.uci.edu/~miki On loan to University of California, Irvine ICQ: 25412074 "Any addition to the truth is a subtraction from it."
