Informix won't work with NFS?

No, we're not trying to do anything fancy.
It's just the workstation that runs informix is NOT the fileserver.
Is that so unusual?
So, upon trying to access a database in his home directory, a user gets:
923: INFORMIX is licensed for local database access only.
FWIW -- I am also the person who asked about informix not working with YP.
(I got responses ranging from "We never had a problem" to "No, it just won't
work with YP" to "We had a problem, here's how to fix it" [which never worked,
but thanks to all who replied, anyway :] -- and finally gave up and now DON'T
use YP passwords on that machine...)
However not using a file server is a bit more problematic.
Is it just this particular (for an HP 800) version that is so crippled,
or is there a work-around, or what???
I find it hard to believe that informix was meant to run on completely
stand-alone machines -- as this one seems to act...
