How to turn the echo off within a 4gl application

Hello fellow netters, I am not sure if someone has posed this question before or not. I am writing a informix 4gl program and there are a couple of fields on the screen that I do not want the user to see what he or she is typing in. Is there a way to turn the echo off within an informix 4gl program? Or is there a way to echo asterisk to the screen while the user is typing? I am playing with the color attribute (like using black on black, etc) but that does not seem to work too well on some terminals. I am currently using informix 4gl version 4.1 with Informix Online 4.1 as my database engine.
