descriptors in esql/c

I'm having a problem using a descriptor. Every time I try to do the describe statement, it returns error 6, which is obviously a system level error. The exact meaning is 'No such device or address'. That isn't helping me much. It looks like the memory location that the descriptor was stored at has been stepped on. I'm sure I didn't do it, because I rewrote the program as simply as possible so that I could reproduce it for informix. That only leaves Informix's run-time libraries or the OS as the culprit, niether of which I can really debug. I have a ticket open with informix, but I just wondered if anyone out there had seen this error before.
