If you don't then a statement can fail and the commit will still occur. SQL, and this is true for all SQL database engines, does not keep track of statement errors for you and do an automatic rollback. If you are not checking the error return it can appear that statements are being missed when in fact they are failing. I have never seen Informix 4.1 miss a statement unless this was the cause.
