Ebexport
Posted in 2016
Larry asked whether dbexport locks the database. Several replies confirmed it takes the database in exclusive mode (otherwise you get error -107), which guarantees a consistent, reloadable export. Suggested alternatives: Art Kagel's myexport/myimport (IIUG Software Repository, plus his utils2_ak package, with sqlcmd or external-table options) which don't lock, and dbcopy/dbmove for table copies. A follow-up asked about exporting from a secondary; answers said it works on an updatable RSS node with LOG_STAGING_DIR set, STOP_APPLY=1 during the export (then back to 0), and DBSPACETEMP pointing to a real temp dbspace.

Yes, dbexport does lock the database in exclusive mode. This helps ensure
data consistency/integrity and that you won't run into problems when
building foreign keys when importing your database later on.
You can look into Art's myexport/myimport utilities which do not lock the
database.

I would say yes, as it also needs exclusive access, in order to run a dbexp=
ort. Otherwise you receive a -107, if you have other shared connections to=
the database.
Thanks,

Yes. You can use my dbexport replacement utility, myexport, to get better

Thank you all for your responses.
Do you have a link to the programs myexport, myimport and dbcopy as well as
some instructions on how to set them up and compile them (and what, if
anything special, is needed to install before compiling them)?

Larry:
You can download myexport from the IIUG Software Repository (
www.iiug.org/software). It is a set of scripts (there is one executable C
utility in the package that is only needed if you want to use the parallel
load/unload options). You will also need my utils2_ak package. The latest
version of that can be downloaded from my web site (
www.askdbmgt.com/my-utilities.html) there is a build instruction document
included, but it builds just by unpacking the shell archive and running
make on linux (and usually Solaris as well). If you use external table
exports and imports (the -E option) that's all you need.
To use the default export/import, which is the slowest option, you'll also
need Jonathan Leffler's sqlcmd package the latest of which is in the IIUG
Repository as well.
To use the HP Loader options you'll need the myonpload utility from the
IIUG Repository.
Note that the external table option is the fastest unload/load so you can
ignore the HP Loader options.
Dbcopy is included in the utils2_ak package, so you'll be good once you
built that. Note that due to a looong standing bug in the ESQL/C libraries
you can't use dbcopy on tables with LVARCHAR columns and it doesn't work
correctly on tables with more than one dumb blob type column. For those
cases you can use the dbmove utility (also in the package).
If you have any trouble building or using these, let me know.

I saw Paul, below, say that you can run a dbexport from a secondary server
without breaking replication? Is this true. It would save me a lot of problems.

AFAIK, this is available on

- STOP=5FAPPLY on (and LOG=5FSTAGING=5FDIR pointing to a secure directory)
- DBSPACETEMP (onconfig) needs to point to a real temp space

Note that the external table option is the fastest unload/load so you can=20
ignore the HP Loader options.=20
Dbcopy is included in the utils2=5Fak package, so you'll be good once you=20
built that. Note that due to a looong standing bug in the ESQL/C libraries =
you can't use dbcopy on tables with LVARCHAR columns and it doesn't work=20
correctly on tables with more than one dumb blob type column. For those=20
cases you can use the dbmove utility (also in the package).=20
If you have any trouble building or using these, let me know.=20

Here are the steps to be followed if you want to perform a *dbexport* on
a secondary sever.
1/ Make sure that a dbspace of type TEMP is available
* before doing a dbexport , you have to have a TEMP dbspace
2/ Make sure the secondary server is RSS or make it RSS if you are in
HDR secondary mode
3/ Stop APPLY in order not apply the logs
* onmode -wm LOG_STAGING_DIR=$INFORMIXDIR/tmp
* onmode -wm STOP_APPLY=1
4/ Perform your dbexport on the RSS secondary
* dbexport -d <database name>
5/ Apply the logs
* onmode -wm STOP_APPLY=0
6/ Wait until the secondary has caught up with the primary and make it
HDR secondary if that is what you want
* onmode -d secondary <name of the primary instance>
