Masa asked how to migrate a very large 7.31 FC2 instance to FC6. Art S. Kagel said sub-release moves only need shutdown, pointing the environment at the new software (installed in a separate directory for easy fallback), restart, and a recent level 0 archive. smooth1 warned of a UC6 bug where a rolled-back CREATE INDEX crashes the engine and corrupts it; another poster asked for a bug ID. No ID given.

I'm going to migrate a very large Informix instance from 7.31 FC2 to 7.31
FC6.
I have done migrations before but with smaller instances. (and test
databases)
Now I need some expert advices how migrating is done in practise.
- What are steps before migration (oncheck etc) ?
- How migration must be done?
- What must be done after migration (update statistics etc) ?
Thanks for your advice!

For migration between sub releases of the same major release all that
is needed is to shutdown, change the environment to point to the new
software (I always install in different directory so I can easily and
quickly revert if there are any problems, and start up the new version.
It is prudent, read sane, to take a level zero archive as close before
the upgrade as feasible. Feasible in that, for example, I just
upgraded over the W/E a server that it takes 30 hours to archive so I
was happy to rely on the week old LEVEL 0, a level2 from Wednesday, and
my log backups as the best I was going to do since I could not take the
server off-line for two days for the upgrade.

Don't! There is a bug in UC6 where if you create an index and
the create index gets rolled back then
a) The rollback fails
b) The engine then Assert Fails and shuts down
c) The engine will NOT restart due to the corruption
and IT IS RESTORE FROM BACKUP TIME!!
UC6 is NO NO
I am moving customers to UC5-1. I have heard this has optimizer
problems (can anyone say more about this e.g. a Bug ID from
the Techinfo Centre and a description so I can find it??).
Is UC7/UC8 out yet?? Does anyone have the release notes??

Does anyone have a Bug ID and/or description from Techinfo on this UC6
index bug?
