As far as I know MFC is available from third parites for X-Windows/Motif. What kind of results they will give you I have no idea. > Mike Segel <mikey@segel.com> writes (in another post): > [about bad support of the Motif version as compared to the MS Windows > version:] > Now in Informix's defense, they have more customers wanting PC / UNIX > client > server versus UNIX / UNIX client server. To do that we need versions for Unix as well as Windows NT that can be used to compile the server part of the application. If we can't do that easily we hardly see any reason to use NewEra at all. There are too many high quality competitors in the client only area of C/S development. Of course for this purpose the GUI part (Motif) isn't realy interesting. What we would realy like to see is a way to write the whole application on MS Windows (95 or NT - most likely NT), and have the server part more or less automatically compiled by the C/C++ compiler on the server. The generation of the C/C++ code could (perhaps should?) be done on the workstation (under MS Windows). I forsee a lot of maintenance trouble when part of the code must be written and maintained on the server, while other parts are done on the workstation. Howe will source code controll, object browsing and so on be done in this senario? Also when we want to compile for different servers (different Unix boxes and Windows NT) the problems just multiply. Has anybody used application partitioning yet? How is it working? What where the problems? How do you maintain it? > Now, if you really want to see a great Object Oriented application > development > environment, please look at NeXTStep / OpenStep. > > [I can see it now, there are some people at Informix saying Oh no, not > again ;-] > Seriously. This is appropriate. NewEra must of course be compared to all its alternatives. PowerBuilder seems to be coming along with application partitioning as well. If they do a good job there is real competition. If Windows NT is your server there seems to be a lot of application partitioning options coming along (even using tools like Delphi and Visual Basic). It would be nice to here from Informix what their plans are. Nils.Myklebust@ccmail.telemax.no NM Data AS, Postbox 9090, Gronland, 0133 Oslo, Norway My opinions are those of my company
