Given that your entire system grinds to a halt, I'd suggest that
it may not actually be a problem with your disks. I presume you
have enabled KAIO?
Check the box to see what is happening. Try running a
dd if=/dev/zero of=/de/rmt/whatever bs=1024 count=102400 and see
how your box performs during a 10MB write to a tape drive.
